The FTC issued FAQs detailing price transparency rules for auto dealers.

Why it matters: Auto dealers and legal teams now have clearer guidance on pricing practices, impacting contracts and regulatory compliance. This helps reduce deceptive advertising risks in the auto sales sector.

  • On September 15, 2026, the FTC published detailed FAQs addressing price transparency in auto sales.
  • The FAQs clarify that advertised vehicle prices must reflect the actual price consumers pay, excluding only government-mandated fees.
  • In March 2026, the FTC sent warning letters to 97 dealership groups about deceptive pricing issues.
  • The National Automobile Dealers Association called the FAQs an important step for compliance clarity.

On September 15, 2026, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a comprehensive set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) aimed at helping automobile dealers comply with price transparency requirements under the FTC Act.

The guidance emphasizes that the advertised price of a vehicle must be the actual amount any consumer could pay, excluding only government-mandated fees. This includes clear treatment of document fees, rebates, discounts, and pricing for vehicles in transit.

This move follows enforcement actions earlier in the year, when the FTC sent warning letters in March 2026 to 97 auto dealership groups nationwide, warning them to disclose all mandatory fees in advertised prices to avoid deceptive pricing practices.

Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said, "The FTC Act requires truthful and accurate pricing, which brings significant benefits for consumers and competition." He added, "Price transparency is a priority for the Trump-Vance FTC, and today’s guidance is intended to help dealers and others in the auto industry better understand how the law applies to their advertising."

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) welcomed the FAQs as "an important step toward providing dealers with clear guidance about the agency’s advertising compliance expectations."

Legal analysts also note that these FAQs will likely influence dealer contracts and internal compliance programs while reducing enforcement risks as dealers adjust to clear regulatory expectations.
