NewMod Closes $9M Funding to Expand AI-Powered Law Firm
NewMod, an AI-powered law firm, secured $9 million in new funding to accelerate its global rollout.
Why it matters: NewMod directly challenges the billable hour with rapid, flat-fee legal work, powered by AI and vetted by lawyers. This approach could reshape how in-house counsel and legal ops source commercial legal services by boosting efficiency and predictability.
- NewMod raised $9M from Y Combinator, 20VC, Urban Innovation Fund, Inception, and unicorn founders.
- Co-founded by ex-OpenAI counsel Pamir Ehsas and MIT engineer Stefan Mandaric.
- AI handles core drafting and review, with 50+ lawyers finalizing agreements for clients.
- Since 2023 launch, NewMod has served 100+ companies, supporting $2B+ in contract value.
NewMod (formerly Arcline) has raised $9 million from Y Combinator, 20VC, Urban Innovation Fund, Inception, and over two dozen unicorn tech founders. The startup applies a blend of automated legal drafting and human review to offer commercial legal work at flat, transparent pricing and industry-leading speed.
- Co-founder Pamir Ehsas, who previously advised OpenAI and Microsoft, partners with MIT engineer Stefan Mandaric to design the platform. Their "hybrid" model applies machine learning to standardize and expedite contracts, then sends the output to one of more than 50 on-network lawyers for review and approval.
- NewMod claims four-hour turnaround times on routine agreements—a significant shift from the days- or weeks-long cycles seen at many traditional firms. The company currently supports clients in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
- Ehsas explains: “Our AI handles the majority of the work, while lawyers review and finalise it. Customers receive full legal accountability, fast turnaround, and transparent pricing.”
Since its 2023 launch, NewMod has reportedly helped over 100 businesses process contracts worth more than $2 billion. The new funding will support platform upgrades and broader international coverage, with a goal to make quality legal access "available globally within minutes." More about NewMod’s approach is discussed in Sifted’s interview.
By the numbers:
- $9M — Amount raised in latest funding round
- 100+ — Number of companies served since 2023
- $2B+ — Contract value supported through NewMod’s platform
Yes, but: The model’s claims about AI performing the majority of legal work have drawn scrutiny, with outside legal tech experts noting that true automation of nuanced legal drafting remains challenging.
What's next: NewMod plans to use the new funding to expand its global lawyer network and roll out to new markets.
