Flock Safety, known for its automated license plate readers and audio detection devices, has discontinued a pilot feature designed to identify human distress sounds such as screams. This feature was part of its Raven audio detection system, which was tested with a limited set of customers but never broadly released.

The Raven system processes audio locally, analyzing overlapping five-second segments to identify specific sounds like gunshots, fireworks, or car crashes. When triggered, it records brief audio clips that are encrypted and stored securely. Importantly, it does not continuously record ambient conversation or recognize personal speech but focuses on high-risk acoustic events.

The now-removed distress detection feature aimed to capture screams and related sounds. However, it raised privacy concerns from legal experts and privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). In response to community feedback and this advocacy, Flock Safety’s Chief Product Officer Baily Quintrell announced, “After careful consideration and community consultation, we decided to remove the feature.”

Quintrell noted the complexities audio sensors introduce in public surveillance: “People want to know whether a device near their street is listening to them,” reflecting growing legal and ethical challenges around acoustic data collection.
